  • Born on January 25, 1986, in Maforki Village, Sierra Leone, Kamara's childhood was drastically altered by the outbreak of civil war in her country when she was just twelve years old.

    When the rebels of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) raided her village in January 1999, Mariatu fled into the bush with several family members.

    During their escape, she lost both hands when an explosive device detonated nearby.

    After weeks of wandering through the bush and encountering other refugees fleeing the conflict, Mariatu was rescued by a group of aid workers who were eventually able to get her to Freetown for medical treatment.

    Although it took months of care and surgeries for Kamara to recover physically from her injuries—she wears prosthetic arms today—she says that it took much longer for her dreams to return amid such trauma.
